Weekly Training Tip: Running in Cold Weather

It’s the beginning of February, and many areas are experiencing COLD weather!  Of course, “Cold” is all relative, but even in sunny So Cal we can tell when it’s winter!

Stormy Weather in Southern California

Stormy Weather in Southern California

Try to schedule your winter running when the sun is the warmest.    Perhaps you can run on your lunch hour when the sun feels nice and toasty.    The wind also can be a serious factor.   On a windy day, try to plan your out-and-back run so you are running into the wind for the first half of the run when you are full of energy.  Then the wind will be at your back, helping you on the homeward stretch.   And remember a proper warm-up is even more important in the winter because exposure to the cold stiffens your muscles and joints.  It’s a good idea to end your run with a slow jog or a brisk walk.

Dressing in layers is the key to staying warm, dry and comfortable in harsh weather.     My favorite base layer is a RaceReady Ready Tech Long Sleeve…..OK, so maybe I’m biased….   If  it’s REALLY COLD where you are, nothing beats our DryLine Zip Shirt!

Ask Mary – Special Diet for Marathon Training

Question: Mary, I trust you have plenty of thought on nutrition for marathon runners.  I’ve read Nancy Clark’s book and researched numerous athletes diets trying to perfect mine.  I tend to gain more weight than wanted toward the peak of high mileage marathon training while concentrating on complex carbs (fruits and veggies) and healthy limited portions of protein.  I consider my menu to be near perfect but my body – NOT!  Is there any type of miracle marathon diet you subscribe to?  If so, I’d like to know about it.    Thanks, Stephanie
Answer:  I don’t subscribe to any special diet.   I find I feel healthy  and have plenty of energy if I eat a variety of foods.  That being said, I do try to avoid processed foods.   Fresh fruits and vegetables, plenty of seafood and wholesome grains are  ideal choices.     I’m fortunate to live in Southern California close to some wonderful Farmer’s Markets.    Buying local at the famer’s market is a “win win” situation – for you and your local farmer.   As a general rule, I do try to read the label of food products I buy at the grocery store.  If a food product contains words that I cannot pronounce, yet alone decipher, I try to steer clear.   I’m surprised at the the number of ingredients a processed loaf of bread contains!   A while back I read Michael Pollen’s book, the Omnivore’s Dilemma.  It truly was an enlightening book for me, and I highly recommend it.    Your food choices effect not only your personal health, but the health of our planet.      Eat well, and live well!

Happy 2010!

We’re back into the swing of things at RaceReady, following a nice holiday spent with my family in Denver.   It was a brief trip – we were only away for 4 days, 3 nights – but it sure was fun.   My favorite part of the holiday season is spending time with family and friends!
